In this tutorial the complete process of the permanent path / environment set up of Python in Windows Operating System will be discussed.

Python Path Setup

Executable files and programs can be found in various directories. That is why the Operating Systems provides the mechanism called search paths which lists all the directories that the operating system searches for the executables. The path is stored in the environment variable which contains the information available to the command shell and various other program.

The path variable is named as Path in Windows, PATH in Unix (case sensitive), while in Mac Operating System the installer handles the path details. In order to invoke the Python interpreter from any specific directory you must first add the Python directory to your path.

Python Path Setup in Windows

  • Locate the Python installed in your machine like Go to
    This Pc > Local Disk (C) > Users > Your User Name > App Data > Local > Programs > Python > Python Current Version
  • Now open “Environment Variables“.
  • Copy the path “This Pc > Local Disk (C) > Users > Your User Name > App Data > Local > Programs > Python > Python Current Version” and add it to the Environment Variable.

Now you have to add the scripts to the Environment Variable.

  • Locate the Scripts installed in your machine like Go to
    This Pc > Local Disk (C) > Users > Your User Name > App Data > Local > Programs > Python > Python Version in your machine > Scripts.
  • Now open “Environment Variables“.
  • Copy the path “This Pc > Local Disk (C) > Users > Your User Name > App Data > Local > Programs > Python > Python Version in your machine > Scripts” and add it to the Environment Variable.

You have successfully setup the Python path permanently in Windows.

Now open the Command Prompt and use the command written below to check the Python.

C:\Users\Your User Name\Python and hit Enter.

The information related to the Python Version installed in your machine will be displayed.

Now you have successfully setup the Python path permanently in Windows & it is working fine.
